San Fermo sits quietly on Ballard Ave NW in a charming, house-like building that instantly sets a cozy tone for your evening. This full-service Italian restaurant invites you into an intimate space where small tables, candlelight, and an open kitchen create the feeling of dining at a close friend’s home rather than a bustling eatery.

The menu leans heavily into traditional Italian flavors with a thoughtful Pacific Northwest touch. Pasta is the star here—dishes like the Saffron Spaghetti Bolognese and Strozzapreti Amatriciana stand out for their well-balanced combinations of rich, savory meats and fresh herbs. Sharing plates like Burrata or the Chickpea Flatbread make for a nice start, while desserts such as the Chocolate Brownie or Olive Oil Cake provide a sweet, homey finish.

San Fermo works well as a spot for celebratory dinners, date nights, or a relaxed small-group dinner with friends or family. Its scale and ambiance encourage slower, more engaged meals, best enjoyed in the evening when the candlelight complements the restaurant’s warm, inviting vibe. The service is warm and attentive, adding to the feeling of personal care, though keep in mind the pace can be a little unhurried during busier nights.

The place draws a local crowd that appreciates nuanced, carefully crafted Italian fare without the fuss of larger restaurants. Outdoor seating on the patio is a nice option when the weather allows, connecting diners with the Ballard neighborhood’s relaxed northwest charm. Slightly smaller portions mean many guests opt to build their meal with an appetizer, entree, and dessert for a satisfying, well-rounded experience.

Overall, if you’re looking for an Italian spot in Seattle that balances classic, richly flavored dishes with a comforting, home-style atmosphere, San Fermo offers a pleasant, grounded choice in the heart of Ballard.

Overall pretty good! Food was very yummy and the portions were small but if you get an app, entree, and dessert then it works out great. We got the baguette as an app and it was kind of stale. They were very accommodating when we asked to sit on the patio! Service was pretty slow so I’m assuming they were busy. The 23% service charge shocked me but there wasn’t even an option to tip so I’m assuming thats why! Overall pretty good would dine again.

Very cute place within the heart of Ballard! We tried lots of things and had some wonderful wine! It was our first time here, and safe to say, not our last! San Fermo is a great date night place, family dinner, or small girls night dinner option! Their pasta was delish and each one brought their own flavor. I recommend getting a different dish every time you go! Food Instagram- @madelines_dines

The service was amazing. So warm and welcoming. The candlelit ambiance with small tables and open kitchen feels like we r dinning in a friend’s house. Every dishes was amazing and the charred cabbage was really refreshing.

My sister and I had the most magical evening at San Fermo last night! The restaurant is in the cutest little house, which makes the atmosphere so warm and charming. Our server was so sweet and made the night feel extra special. We shared the caprese, agnolotti, and bolognese, and every single dish was incredible. We just got back from Italy and honestly agreed it was on par (if not better!) than what we had there. The wine was also amazing and paired perfectly with our meal. Overall, such a special spot — we can’t wait to come back!

My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our anniversary, and it was perfect! The service was impeccable, and everyone was so friendly. The food was insanely delicious and fresh! I highly recommend the spaghetti Bolognese! Definitely a must try spot in Seattle!

The Peach starter was amazing and the Crab Risotto was spot-on—definitely the highlights. But the portions are small considered with the price, and a 24% service charge feels outrageous when the service is slow and the server isn’t very friendly. Great food, but the overall experience was disappointing.

6/30/25: This was maybe our sixth time here over the past three years and one of the best! We walked in around 5:30 on a Monday for a birthday celebration hoping to sit at the bar and it worked out perfectly. Bartender was great, food highlights were the short rib and the tiramisu. The rigatoni was good, but not super special until we started putting pieces of the short rib in it. We did also really like the grilled onion and the seasonal salad.

One of the best restaurants in Seattle! I love the focus on local and seasonal produce and the dishes are phenomenal. I’m consistently impressed with their creativity, especially the pairing of unusual flavours as well as keeping timeless classics. We almost always get the spaghetti because it’s such an indulgence but I’ve also had some of their other mains and enjoyed every one. The antipasti are delightful and could be combined as shared small plates for those interested in a lighter meal. Do try their cocktails, I had a refreshing summer spritz which had a lovely subtle rose flavour like Turkish delight. The San Fermo Negroni was perfect. Also leave room for desserts because I think this is where the creativity shines. I’ve had their earl grey tiramisu and seasonal gelato — both incredible. The staff are knowledgeable and so helpful. Every time I’ve been they’ve directed us towards wonderful wine pairings and helped us decide on dishes. Speaking to the staff and hearing their perspectives is one of the reasons we keep coming back every year. I looked back at a few of the other reviews and I’d actually disagree on the feedback on portion sizes. I sense the restaurant’s focus is on quality not quantity. This is sensible dining imho. I found the mains to be filling and perfectly sized. Most American size portions can be a bit over the top but not here. (Photos are from the two recent visits, one indoor and the other out door — both wonderful) Thank you so much San Fermo!
